Bearings for the wind sector

Bearings for the wind sector

Cylindrical roller bearings also find application in wind turbines, primarily for their high capacity to withstand radial loads.

In wind turbine generators, cylindrical roller bearings can be used in various positions, including:

  1. In the hub housing: to support the rotor shaft. In this position, they must withstand not only the weight of the blades but also the dynamic loads generated by rotation and wind variations.

  2. In the gearbox: if present, to support the shafts and manage the high loads due to power transmission. In this application, the ability of cylindrical roller bearings to withstand high loads and operate effectively even under conditions of high slippage is particularly advantageous.

  3. In the generator: to support the generator shaft, ensuring smooth and reliable rotation.

However, it is important to note that, although cylindrical roller bearings are widely used, the choice of bearing type depends on specific technical requirements, such as expected loads, rotational speed, and operating conditions.

Additionally, in some cases, they may be combined with other types of bearings, such as tapered or spherical roller bearings, to optimize performance and service life of the bearing system.
